Joe Canterbury

Joe Canterbury is a seasoned international business executive, entrepreneur, and investor with vast experience expanding iconic and emerging consumer brands around the world. In addition to his role as founder and owner of Chaucer Global Investing & Advisory, he is a co-founder and board member of Sports Entertainment Asia, Ltd. (SEAL), the exclusive franchisee for Topgolf across greater China and co-founder and board member of TG SEA Development Pte., Ltd., the exclusive Topgolf franchisee across Southeast Asia. He is also the co-founder and board member of Asian Urgent Care Development, the exclusive franchisee for FastMed Urgent Care across Greater China.

Mr. Canterbury spent many years in executive roles with Starbucks Coffee and Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) and has vast experience in international business development, licensing & franchising, corporate development, M&A, new market entry, finance, and operations. He joined Starbucks International in 2000 and led the International Business Development team from 2002-2007, during which Starbucks opened 25 new markets across Asia, Europe, and Latin America through JVs and franchise partners, along with executing numerous franchisee buy-in investments and acquisitions across China, the rest of Asia and Europe. He then moved to Amsterdam as Vice President of New Businesses for Starbucks EMEA and was responsible for launching and leading new markets across Central/Eastern Europe and the Middle East, along with building a European wide licensing business for travel channels (airports, train stations, etc.). Later, he served as Managing Director for Starbucks Germany before returning to the US to lead Global Business Development for the retail and CPG businesses, and left Starbucks in 2012 after leading the entry into India through a JV with Tata.

Following Starbucks, he worked as SVP of Business Development & Operations for Appconomy, an early-stage Austin-Shanghai based mobile technology company focused on China’s retail sector. In 2016, he co-founded Pacific Springboard which secured Asian franchise rights with US based healthy lifestyle brands and later spun them off as independent businesses.

Prior to Starbucks, he worked with Mercedes-Benz’s parent, Daimler AG, in corporate development and M&A at the headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany and later in Singapore, where he was managing M&A and JV projects across Asia-Pacific for the automotive and truck divisions, as well as financial services and IT companies. He also spent half a year based in Buenos Aires with Mercedes-Benz Argentina.

Mr. Canterbury serves on numerous boards of companies based in the US and Asia. He has lived and worked in eight countries and speaks German fluently, along with basic Spanish and emerging Mandarin. He received his B.A. from Washington & Lee University, a Master’s in International Business from Johannes Kepler Universität in Linz, Austria and an MBA from Texas A&M University. He splits his time between Austin, Texas and Shanghai.
